Geeta, aged 18 and Gauri aged 19, (names changed) were rescued by the Ashray team from Delhi in January 2023. The survivors from Jharkhand, were approached by an imposter posing as a job recruiter in March 2022. He convinced the girls and their parents to move to Delhi with promises of better education and a better life.
Upon arriving in Delhi, the girls were taken to a placement centre and tricked into submitting their mobile phones. They were then threatened, abused, and were pushed into sexually abusive situations. When the parents were unable to contact the girls for a while, they contacted the Ashray team that promptly filed a case for missing girls. In the first week of January this year, the girls were rescued and brought back to their homes in Gumla, where they were handed over to the government’s Child Welfare Committee.
The girls shared that despite not knowing what trafficking was, they felt trapped, cheated and kept screaming for help within their hearts. They were grateful to the Ashray team for pushing through all odds and restoring their freedom and rights. The Ashray team are currently counselling the girls.

December, 2020

Pooja (name changed) aged 14, was being forced to marry a man that her family found on a social media platform. Soon, they started the wedding preparations as the groom did not ask them for dowry.

In December 2022, an Ashray youth volunteer in Bihar, enquired about the celebration, soon he realised that it was a case of child marriage.
The volunteer immediately contacted the Bihar Ashray Team, and we started investigating the groom (trafficker). It was revealed that he was an imposter with different names on social media and on government identity cards.

We immediately called the police and did not let the trafficker escape. With the help of the police, we got to know that trafficker would marry young girls and sell them into sex slavery.

With Ashray Team’s efforts, we were successful in getting that trafficker arrested and putting him behind bars. The incident left Pooja traumatised, but she is grateful to the Ashray team for their timely intervention. We are counselling her as she goes back to school.
